Crossed Finch and Red Boat Waterline

posted Friday, 17 August 2007

We are taking it easy this summer and skipping the Fair.  We don't want to do anything to disturb Tom's immune system and the stress of five 14-hour days working the fair, plus the probability of back strain moving everything there and back, and the almost certainly of getting sick after the Fair (teaching hundreds of kids to weave is bound to get you exposed to lots of germs and we always caught colds after the Fair) was just silly to go through. I felt a bit bad since our pictures are in the paper, weaving, from previous Fairs. But we said last year that we couldn't do the Fair this year - though our reasons were different. Oh well. It may be the end of the Fiber Folk unless other people pick up the ball.

The finches in the sunroom have had another generation. Two babies showed up two days ago. One is certainly a zebra finch. But the other is either a pinto zebra, a Java finch baby being raised by zebras, or a Java-Zebra cross.  Finches do cross, but I can't find anything on this particular hybrid.  Here are some not very good pictures of the two together. I'll try to get better pictures.

zeebs maybe

The one on the right is certainly a zebra finchling - the one on the left is the puzzle.

We are also delighted with our new painting by Jules Worthington. It is a departure from his landscape style and is both realistic and abstract. It was the hit of his recent show and we - with careful planning - were the first ones to see it and grabbed it on the spot. Jules said lots of people wanted it.

It is called Red Boat Waterline. It is splendid!

I've got a pair of zebra finches that laid two eggs, and both hatched to be regular grey zebras, yet I brought one egg home from a bird store where I used to work, and the one that hatched from there looks JUST like the puzzle baby in your picture. It's definitely not a java. Did you ever figure out what it was? It's not a cross with a java either, but it could be a cross with a society. Did you ever come to a conclusion? Please reply to my email, as I'll probably never find this site again. =P
